Spreading the Light

As Salaam u Alaikum Wa Rahmatul Allah I wa Barakatuh

All Praise is due to Allah the Lord of the world and peace and salutations be upon our beloved Prophet Nabi Muhammad (PBUH).

We had the opportunity of going to Gambia, which is in the western part of Africa. Myself and Brother Shiraz Asmall, who is the manager of the braille department at Madrassa An-Noor for the Blind, left on the 9April 2019 for Banjul, Gambia. It took us two days to reach Banjul, via Istanbul. On Thursday, 11 April, we met the students, teachers, parents and guardians of a few prospective students who wish to come study at Madrassa An-Noor for the Blind. We then interviewed them.

Most of the children that we met were totally blind. Only a few were partially sighted and their knowledge of Islamic education was very minimal. During the interview, they recited for all of us a few verses of the Holy Qur'an. We also had the opportunity of interacting with some senior blind elders in Gambia who mentioned to us that they wished that we had come to them thirty years earlier, as they had always been waiting for this type of assistance, for someone to teach them to read the Holy Qur'an in Braille.

Alhamdulillah, we also met and had the assistance of Sheikh Ibrahim Sillah, who is a Gambian citizen and a graduate of Darul Uloom Zakariyyah. He is running a Hifz institute in the Northern part of Gambia and he is part of our committee trying to assist us in establishing a Madrassa for the students in Gambia so that they may learn to recite the Holy Quran in Braille.

We then left Gambia via the city of Dakar, Senegal, back to Istanbul and went straight on to Tirana, the capital city of Albania. Albania is a beautiful country and the majority of its citizens are Muslim. Due to the fact that the country was under communist rule, the Islamic awareness is very poor.

Moulana Nazir Malik met me at the airport. He is from India and he is married locally in Albania. We had the opportunity thereafter to go to an organisation for the Blind in Albania. A Dawat was made for all the blind students at the restaurant and we had the opportunity to interact with the president of the Albanian Blind organisation, Mr Ardjan Hysa. Our purpose of networking with the blind Muslims of the world was explained.

Alhamdulillah, we received a very warm reception. We were also privileged and honoured to meet (Hoxa) Ahmed Kalaya and he was very helpful in assisting us to meet the Blind youth of Albania. Insha Allah, a program is being made for some of these students to come to study at Madrassa An-Noor for the Blind.

We request your Dua that Allah Ta'ala makes our task easy. Ameen.

Jazak Allahu Khayran
